Introduction to Basketball Fundamentals

Day 1 of 3

  • Warm-Up

    • Begin with light jogging, dynamic stretching, and basic calisthenics to prepare the students for physical activity.

    • Introductions

 

  • Introduction to Basketball

    • Explain the basic rules, objectives, and positions in basketball.

    • Familiarize students with the court, hoop, and the names of positions (point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center).

 

  • Dribbling Fundamentals

    • Teach proper dribbling technique using the "Stationary Dribbling Drill":

    • Use fingertips, not palms.

    • Keep the ball low to the ground.

    • Dribble with both hands.

    • Have students practice dribbling around cones.

    • Double Dribble 

    • Crossover

 

  • Passing Basics

    • Introduce chest passes, bounce passes, and overhead passes with the "Passing Progression Drill."

    • Emphasize the importance of accuracy and proper body positioning.

    • Allow students to practice passing with partners.

    • Pivoting and Pass Fake

 

  • Shooting Basics

    • Teach the very basics of shooting with the "Form Shooting Drill":

    • Shooting stance, balance, and hand placement.

    • Aim for the hoop, not the backboard.

    • Allow students to practice close-range shots.

    • Layups - Two steps

 

  • Game Situation Awareness

    • Explain basic game concepts, such as spacing, team offense, and defense.

 

  • Cool Down

    • Finish with light stretching and deep breathing exercises.
